Mrs. Bethune’s background as a teacher inspired her to open the Daytona Educational and Industrial Training School for Negro Girls in Daytona Beach, Florida. She employed her diverse talents when she founded the National Council of Negro Women in 1935. She envisioned the NCNW to be an “organization of organizations” that would represent the national and international concerns of black women. It would also give black women the opportunity to realize their goals for social justice and human rights through united, constructive action.
The National Council of Negro Women, Inc. (NCNW) is excited to announce that prolific educator, community organizer, and civil rights advocate Dr. A. Lois Keith will serve as the NCNW’s new Chair of the Board, steering the organization’s vision into 2023 and beyond. Dr. Keith will be bringing her years of experience in leadership, advocacy, and education to guide the NCNW and ensure that the organization’s goals of promoting social justice, STEAM education, entrepreneurship, and health equity are further realized in the upcoming years.
Shavon Arline-Bradley, who is also an ordained minister, brings 21 years of experience in healthcare, equity diversity & inclusion (EDI), government affairs, and executive leadership. She is the founding principal and CEO of R.E.A.C.H. Beyond Solutions, a public health, advocacy, and executive leadership firm promoting EDI, political and organizational strategy, risk management, government affairs, and technical assistance. Under her leadership, the firm’s gross profit grew exponentially in 5 years by broadening its client base to include federal government, foundation, corporate, non-profit, and political candidate entities in the United States and the Netherlands.
Our founder Mary McLeod Bethune founded our organization in 1935 in New York City. She was an educator, philanthropist, humanitarian, and civil rights advocate. Dr Bethune once said, "Faith is the first factor in a life devoted to service". For over 55 years Montgomery County MD Section has continued the legacy of Dr. Bethune by leading, advocating for, and empowering women of African descent, their families, and communities. Our members work collectively to elevate our families through education, collaboration, and community services. "Our motto is "Serving Is What We Do' and we believe that it is critical to be visible in our communities. Therefore, our members feed the hungry, cloth the needy, care for our senior citizens, help the homeless and mentor young ladies in middle and high schools. Lastly, I am reminded of Shirley Chisholm's two quotes " Service is the rent we pay for room on this earth", and "Progress is not made by standing on the sideline complaining, you make progress by implementing ideas". Montgomery County Section has faith and ideas that will continue helping and uplifting our youths, families, and communities.
Montgomery County MD Section's guiding principle, embodied in our uplifting motto "Serving Is What We Do," reflects our unwavering commitment to active community engagement. We recognize the paramount importance of positively impacting the lives of our youth and families, and our dedicated members are the heartbeat of our transformative initiatives. In addition to our ongoing efforts in nourishing the hungry, providing clothing for the needy, caring for senior citizens, assisting the homeless, and mentoring young ladies in schools, we have expanded our scope to address critical issues through our specialized committees including health, social justice, people in crisis, education, and partnership with Good Health Women's Immunization Networks (Good Health WINS).
Your support and contributions will enable the Montgomery County MD section of The National Council of Negro Women to meet our goals and improve conditions in our community.
